Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy for Men
Bio-Identical Hormone Pellet Therapy(BHRT) for MEN
What is Andropause?
Andropause is a collections of symptoms, including fatigue and decrease in libido attributed to a gradual decline in testosterone levels. As men age especially those in their late 30’s and older, testosterone begins to decrease.
Signs and symptoms of low testosterone may include:
- Muscle weakness and loss of lean body mass
- Increased fat in the abdominal area and weight gain
- Decreased body hair and sagging skin/wrinkles
- Mental and physical fatigue
- Decline in physical performance and endurance
- Decreased libido/stamina
- Decreased cognitive function
Testosterone replacement therapy is not routinely used to treat infertility, erectile dysfunction or non-specific symptoms. If this is an issue, please let Dr. Praderio know.
Who is NOT a candidate for T pellet therapy?
Patients who have a history of the following conditions
- Undiagnosed prostate condition
- Unexplained PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) elevation- this level will be checked prior to your consultation
- High levels of Hematocrit (blood cell count)
- Severe lower urinary tract symptoms associated with benign prostatic enlargement
- Severe congestive heart failure or untreated chronic heart disease
- Bleeding or clotting disorder. Ex. if you have had a blood clot in the past
How and where are pellets inserted?
The insertion of pellets is a simple, relatively painless procedure done under local anesthesia. The pellets are usually inserted in the upper buttocks through a small incision, which is then taped and closed with a waterproof incision. You will receive post pellet insertion instructions that address how to take care of your incision.
How long until I feel better after pellets are inserted?
Men usually take 2-4 weeks before they start to notice the “full” benefits of the pellets. Improvements in blood testosterone levels and libido (sex drive) generally occur within the first week after insertion.
How long do pellets last?
The pellets usually last between 5-6 months in men. The pellets do not need to be removed. They completely dissolve on their own. You will do repeat blood work at 6 weeks post insertion to ensure your levels are adequate and receive a phone call to ask how you are feeling and make sure you are satisfied with your results. We will also call you after 5 months just to ask how you are feeling. You may redraw your labs at that time if you desire repeat T insertion.
Are there any complications from the insertion of the pellets?
Complications from the insertion of pellets include; minor bleeding or bruising, discoloration of the skin, infection and the possible extrusion of the pellet. Other than slight bruising or discoloration of the skin, these complications are very rare.
After the insertion of the implants, vigorous physical activity is avoided 5-7 days in men. Early physical activity is a cause of ‘extrusion’, which is a pellet working its way out.
What are some possible side effects of T pellet therapy?
- Increased red blood cell production.
- Fluid retention
- Acne
- Decreased urine stream
- Increased frequency of urination
- Smaller testicle size
- Reduced sperm count
These are all reversible side effects and may be related to your dosing (if your T levels are too high). Dr Praderio will carefully review your labs before dosing you to prevent these if possible. Please call us and let us know if you are experiencing any of these for further instructions.
